In sum, this represents a 15 per cent increase in the number of Nor-Shipping delegates compared to 2007. Nor-Shipping 2009 featured 22 national pavilions and four thematic pavilions in 6 halls. This redesigned thematic exhibition layout was a success, and Nor-Shipping 2011 will feature a similar layout.

"We believed that the market downturn would lead the maritime industry to think again how it reaches out to the market," said Tollef Schiander, Director for Nor-Shipping. "Companies concentrate their resources on those activities and marketplaces that get results. This year’s Nor-Shipping was more popular than ever. In a time of crisis, the market came here to rally, based on visitor and exhibitor figures."
The largest ever!
Nor-Shipping 2009 was the largest in the event’s history, dating back to 1967. 1105 exhibitors from 52 countries participated. By comparison, Nor-Shipping 2007, which took place in the midst of a market boom, had 830 exhibitors from 42 countries.
The Leading Voices conference that opened Nor-Shipping 2009 on Tuesday, 9 June got the show off to a trend-setting start. Attended by Norway’s King, Harald V, the conference featured leaders of global stature, including IMO Secretary-General Efthimios Mitropoulos, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Chairman & CEO Richard Fain and Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA CEO Ingar Skaug, discussing shipping’s role in the fight against climate change. CNN’s Todd Benjamin led round-table discussions that led to lively debate about the industry’s, and regulators’, efforts to contain greenhouse gas emissions.
At the conference, the Heyerdahl Award winner was announced: Farstad Shipping ASA won, based on its latest newbuildings “Far Samson” and “Far Serenade” – a cutting-edge construction support vessel and platform supply vessel, respectively. The first-ever Clean Shipping awards went to RCCL’s Save the Waves programme (the Clean Sea Award), Teekay Corporation’s Amundsen Spirit (the Clean Air Award) and Stena Bulk’s EMAXair concept (the Clean Innovation Award). “Far Samson” was proclaimed Skipsrevyen’s Ship of the Year 2009 by His Majesty King Harald V of Norway.
Several companies exhibiting at Nor-Shipping announced contracts signed during the exhibition, and the hectic commercial and professional activity continued throughout the exhibition.
In addition to the deal-making, Nor-Shipping’s social side was in full bloom in 2009. The traditional Nor-Shipping barbecue at Det Norske Veritas’ Høvik campus on Tuesday evening drew 2,500 attendees, and countless other events took place throughout the week in a (mostly) sunny summertime Oslo.
