The project, which was launched at the recent annual conference of the Shellfish Association of Great Britain (SAGB), was co-ordinated by Seafish on behalf of the industry. Co-authors were Dr Nick Lake (consultant) and Dr Sue Utting of Seafish. It highlighted the sustainable development of the industry, through the long term management of stocks and marine ecosystems from the socio-economic and environmental perspectives. Comments had been gathered from a wide range of stakeholders, including from within the industry, to help formulate the text. The Strategy lists a number of issues that affect the industry as a whole, as well as issues that are specific to each sector, from hand gatherers to aquaculture businesses, and gives recommendations for the sustainable development of the shellfish industry. While various organisations and stakeholders have been identified to support the implementation of the Strategy, it has to be recognised that this will depend on their having the remit and resources available.
